Today 5th and 6th classes went to Monaghan County Museum at 10am on the bus. The exhibition was called World Within Walls. We learned about St Davnets. John Mc Gurdy designed the building. It held 300 people. 130 people from Armagh were the first to go to the asylum. One of the reasons you could be committed was for excessive drinking of tea! You could also be taken in for disabilities or being an orphan. We saw three uniforms that the staff would have worn. The hospital owned their own firetruck and they had a fireman as well. The patients had to help do jobs like laundry and gardening. The hospital owned 240 pigs, 4 horses and 2 donkeys. The nurses lived on the campus. Work was like therapy to patients. Peader O Donnell got better working conditions for the staff. We learned all this and more from Pauline at the museum. The tour lasted for two and a half hours. We all found it very interesting and fun. Report by Eimear Treanor 6th Class
